Sri Lankan president Anura Kumara Dissanayake has said that one or two former army officials will soon be arrested in connection with the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings.
Speaking to members of the Sri Lankan diaspora in the United States during his ongoing visit, Dissanayake claimed that investigations under his government were moving forward after years of political interference.
The government has received a botched investigation, he said, adding that fresh inquiries may be required. “Politics is a main reason for being unable to find those responsible for the attacks. People suspected of being responsible for the attacks came into power soon after the Easter attacks. People suspected of being involved in the attacks were also found to be holding high-ranking posts. Then how do you presume their actions would be?”
He went on to accuse previous administrations of concealing evidence and misleading the inquiry. “We have received an investigation under such circumstances. It is not where an incident occurred yesterday, and the investigation was launched today. This is a difficult task. But I believe the CID is capable.”
Dissanayake added that “several former military officials are to be arrested soon,” alongside the recent detention of CID officers, insisting that the investigation was “continuing and advancing.”
The Easter Sunday bombings, which killed more than 260 people in coordinated attacks on churches and hotels, have faced multiple inquiries in Sri Lanka. Survivors and Catholic leaders have long accused successive governments of a cover-up, with calls for an independent international investigation growing amid claims of military and state intelligence involvement.
