Sri Lankan leaders pay tribute to Buddhist monk

Sri Lanka’s president and prime minister took part in a Buddhist ceremony last week, presenting religious items to a senior Buddhist monk who has been appointed head of the Amarapura Nikaya order.

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe presented a ceremonial fan to the newly appointed Maha Nayaka, whilst President Maithripala Sirisena offered a religious scroll at a ceremony Independence Square in Colombo.

The speaker of Sr Lanka’s parliament Karu Jayasuriya also attended the ceremony alongside other senior Sri Lankan ministers and MPs. The Amarapura Nikaya is one of the three major Buddhist orders in Sri Lanka.
