Rishad Bathiudeen warns of reputational risk following resignation of Mullaitivu judge

<p>Former Sri Lankan minister Rishad Bathiudeen, voiced his concerns regarding the recent resignation of Mullaitivu District Judge T. Saravanarajah. In a statement, he emphasised that pressuring the judiciary in various ways is detrimental, especially for countries like Sri Lanka that rely on international aid.</p> <p>Bathiudeen pointed out that comments made by MPs advocating majoritarian views can be perceived as exerting pressure on judges and the justice system. He noted that Sri Lanka has been in the international spotlight in recent years due to questions surrounding the national question and financial management. The international community has expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of accountability and Sri Lanka's ability to meet its debt obligations.</p> <p>The MP stressed the importance of politicians acting responsibly and ensuring the aspirations and political demands of minority communities are met to appease the international community. He also questioned the motives behind certain MPs' comments and whether they aimed to influence, intimidate, or undermine the judiciary. Bathiudeen emphasized that expecting the judicial branch to conform to majoritarian views is unhealthy.</p> <p>He concluded by stating that what happened to the Mullaitivu judge should not happen to anyone else, and the government should provide reassurance in this regard.</p>
