A Sri Lankan army soldier stationed at the occupying military camp in Iranamadu, Kilinochchi, has been arrested for possessing Kerala cannabis, senior military officials confirmed.

During the operation, authorities reportedly recovered 20 grams and 320 milligrams of the illegal substance from the soldier. The arrest took place within the confines of the military facility, located in the heart of the Northern Province.

The soldier was subsequently handed over to the police and produced before the Kilinochchi Magistrate’s Court. The court ordered that he be remanded until 21 July.

Further investigations are reportedly being carried out by the police.

The presence of cannabis and other contraband within military ranks has raised concerns in the past, particularly in former war zones such as Kilinochchi, where the Sri Lankan military maintains a significant presence years after the end of the armed conflict.

For years, Tamils have alleged that the Sri Lankan military has been involved in the dealing of illegal narcotic across the Tamil homeland.
