The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) financed a project carried out by the Sri Lankan military to build health facilities in the Tamil North-East this month.

The Sri Lankan army declared that it had “made a monumental contribution to the people of Jaffna” in carrying out construction for the project.

The GFATM, a massive financing organisation that invests nearly US$4 billion a year in programs across the world, contributed millions of rupees towards the project which saw two outpatient departments in hospitals in Vadukkodai and Kayts constructed, alongside a Medical Officer of Health (MOH) office in Kilinochchi.
The Fund was founded in 2002, with donations from organisations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
“This long-felt need for a complex of those facilities with new-storied buildings was made possible due to untiring hard work of Army Engineers together with the troops in the SFHQ-J,” stated an official military website.
Sri Lanka’s Minister of Health Rajitha Senaratne spoke at the opening ceremony this week, where he reportedly “spoke high of the Army contribution and praised the Commander of the Army and everyone who contributed to the project”.
A representative from the GFATM was also present, alongside dozens of Sri Lankan military personnel.
