German industry leaders support calls for asylum seeker employment

German industry leaders have called for asylum seekers to be allowed to work, reports the Telegraph.

Legislation in Germany currently prohibits asylum seekers from working whilst their application is being processed.

The president of the national Union of Employers Federations, Ingo Kramer, said,

“Many people who come to us on the run from war will stay long-term, or even forever. It’s in everyone’s interest to ensure that these people are able to integrate quickly into the job market.”

The head of the German Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Eric Schwietzer, also supported the move, stating,

“Asylum-seekers with a prospect of staying, and those with humanitarian leave to remain, who are starting training should be able to finish that without worrying about being expelled.”
