Four Tamil National People's Front activists have been arrested by the Kilinochchi Police and subject to interrogation in the early hours of today.
Those arrested include the head of the women’s wing of the TNPF Vasuki Suthahar, Jaffna District activist Theepan Thilisan and women’s rights activist Kiruba Kitharan. The TNPF activists have since been granted bail.
They were initially arrested in connection to an incident last week in which the TNPF leader, Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, was assaulted and had a loaded gun drawn on him by police officers in plain clothes.
Ponnambalam was similarly arrested after being named as an 'accused person' in the incident. Ponnambalam was set to table a special motion in Parliament prior to his arrest.
