Fate of Assad must not hold up Syria's peace process says UN Sec-Gen

The establishment of a humanitarian ceasefire and negotiations to end the civil war in Syria must not be delayed by disagreements over the eventual fate of Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad, said the UN Secretary General on Saturday.

Speaking at a news conference in Geneva on Saturday, Mr Ki Moon said,

“I believe that the future of Syria, or the future of all these peace talks, the Syrian-led negotiation, should not be held up by an issue of the future of one man. Basically I believe that it us up to the Syrian people who have to decide the future of President Assad.

Commenting on the Vienna meeting last week, Mr Ki Moon said,

“While I know that substantial differences still remain, I hope that in the coming days and weeks they will be able to make further progress towards a Syrian-led political solution to the crisis.”
