EU reiterates stance of labelling Israeli products made in occupied territories

The European Union reinforced its position that products made on Israeli settlements in Palestinian land must be clearly labelled in Europe.

EU foreign ministers on Monday said,

“The EU and its member States are committed to ensure continued, full and effective implementation of existing EU legislations and bilateral arrangements applicable to settlements products.

The Ministers stressed that lands occupied by Israel since the 1967 Middle East war are not part of the internationally recognised borders of Israel.

Israel’s foreign ministry, in a response to the statement, accused the EU of holding Israel to double standards, whilst ignoring the role of Palestine in the stalling of peace talks.

The Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) welcomed the EU statement and called for greater European involvement in the process.

The EU blamed both sides for the escalation in past months, adding that “Security measures alone cannot stop the cycle of violence,” called for “A fundamental change of policy by Israeli with regard to the occupied Palestinian territory.”
