North-East protests continue with call for merger and power sharing

A rolling 100-day campaign demanding an irrevocable, collective form of power-sharing for the merged Northern and Eastern provinces continued this week, with residents of Puliyankulam in Mullaitivu staging the eleventh consecutive day of protests.

The demonstration, organised by the Northern Eastern Coordinating Committee, saw participants peacefully holding placards calling for an end to state-led land grabs, violations of religious freedom, and other forms of violence in the Tamil homeland. Protesters reiterated that without addressing these ongoing injustices, the people of the North-East will continue to demand a united political settlement through a collective federal solution.

Puliyankulam, which falls under the Oddusuddan Divisional Secretariat, became the latest site in the rotating campaign that will cover all eight districts of the Northern and Eastern provinces.

The protest follows the tenth day’s rally in Thiriyai, Trincomalee, on 10 August, where residents, still grappling with the long-term impacts of war and the continuing seizure of Tamil lands, gathered in large numbers to urge the Sri Lankan government to grant an irrevocable federal solution.

Campaign organisers have stressed that this sustained series of protests aims to keep the demand for Tamil political rights at the forefront of both national and international attention, warning that without structural political reform, the North-East will remain trapped in cycles of dispossession and militarisation.
