Sundaralingam Kandeepan of the Democratic Tamil National Alliance (DTNA) has been elected as the new Mayor of Vavuniya Municipal Council, narrowly defeating his opponent by a single vote. Parameshwaran Kartheepan, also of the DTNA, was elected Deputy Mayor in a similarly close contest.

The election was held at the Council Assembly Hall earlier this week, under the supervision of the Northern Province Local Government Commissioner, Mrs Devananthini. Voting was conducted through an open ballot system.

Kandeepan, representing the DTNA, secured 11 votes, edging out Sivasothy Sivashankar of the National People’s Power (NPP), who received 10 votes. With this result, Kandeepan was formally declared the newly elected Mayor of the Vavuniya Municipal Council.

The Deputy Mayor position was also contested shortly after. Parameshwaran Kartheepan, another DTNA candidate, received 11 votes, while independent candidate Sivasubramaniam Premadas obtained 10. Kartheepan was subsequently announced as the Deputy Mayor.
