Chief Minister calls on India to ‘apply pressure’ on Sri Lanka

The Chief Minister of the Northern Province has called on the Indian government to “apply political pressure” on Sri Lanka in order to bring about a political solution to the ethnic conflict on the island.

Speaking at a farewell dinner in Jaffna to honour outgoing Indian Consul General A Nadarajan, Chief Minister C V Wigneswaran said that “India needs to be robust in its foreign policy with Sri Lanka in order to find a lasting solution to the ethnic conflict”.

“India should apply political pressure on the Government for a federal solution rather than strengthening more economic ties, as has been the case in recent times,” he added.

He also noted that the 13th amendment to the Sri Lankan constitution has diluted powers that provincial councils were envisaged to have.
