Batticaloa Bar Association joins protest over lack of judicial independence

On October 3rd, the Batticaloa Bar Association added their voices to the ongoing protests, which condemn the lack of independence of the judiciary. This movement has gained momentum following the resignation of Mullaitivu District Judge T. Saravanarajah, who stepped down from all his posts due to receiving death threats.

The protest took place in front of the court complex in Batticaloa, where demonstrators, primarily lawyers from the Batticaloa Bar Association, marched from the court complex to one of the main junctions in Batticaloa town and back to the court complex. The lawyers, as a show of solidarity, refused to participate in any court proceedings and vowed to continue their strike indefinitely.
