Assassinated Tamil activist Vigneswaran commemorated by TNPF

The 17th anniversary of the assassination of Tamil activist Vanniasingham Vigneswaran was commemorated by the Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) last week.

TNPF MP S. Kajendren and TNPF activists attended the commemoration and honoured the memory and activism of Vigneswaran who was assassinated on the morning of April 7, 2006 as he was entering the Bank of Ceylon's Trincomalee branch which was located within a High Security Zone between two Sri Lankan army checkpoints.

Vigneswaran was assassinated on the day he was about to be announced by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) as the national list replacement of MP Joseph Pararajasingham, who was assassinated on Christmas day in 2005. Vigneswaran has previously led a campaign against the installation of a Buddha statue near the Trincomalee Central Bus Stand.

Vigneswaran was posthumously conferred the title 'Maamanithar' by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

"Steadfast and honest, he opposed the genocidal war by the successive Sinhala governments which destroyed thousands of tamil lives and their property, plundered Tamils possessions and resources, and was intent on destroying Tamil National symbols. Vigeswaran fought to free Tamils from this menace," LTTE leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran said in the statement.
