Responding to the announcement by the Canadian government on sanctions on former Sri Lankan Presidents Gotabaya and Mahinda Rajapaksa, and other state officials, US Congressman Gregory Meeks has stressed the need for Sri Lanka to “take meaningful action on issues related to justice, accountability and reconciliation”.
On Twitter he stated:
RM @RepGregoryMeeks: It’s critical for Sri Lanka to take meaningful action on issues related to justice, accountability and reconciliation — an important prerequisite towards building an inclusive society for Sri Lankans of all backgrounds. https://t.co/S3w4QNk4av

The statement comes as there is renewed pressure on the Sri Lankan government to improve its dire human rights record. Last month the US announced Magnitsky-style sanctions on the former head of a clandestine Sri Lankan Army platoon, known as the “Tripoli Platoon”, Prabath Bulathwatte.
