Yesterday in Nedungeni, Vavuniya, in the northern province, Tamils gathered for the 96th day of a 100-day protest to call for a dignified political solution.
"We are not asking for partition or independence; we are calling for a political solution with dignified rights within Sri Lanka", protesters told journalists.
The protest drew a diverse array of people, including men, women, young people and civil society representatives.
"Devolution is a democratic right to the North Eastern Provinces. The 13th Amendment constitutionally guarantees the right to devolution".
The protesters called on the government of Sri Lanka, India and the international community to ensure devolution.
"We want our land, our right to freedom of movement, our right to freedom of speech", protesters maintained.
The demonstrators further called for the elimination of violence against women.
