World leaders urge ceasefire to investigate passenger plane crash in Ukraine

World leaders urged an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine in order to investigate a suspecting shooting down of a Malaysian airlines passenger plane departing from the Netherlands on Thursday.

Calling for a credible investigation and an immediate ceasefire the US president Barack Obama said, "the eyes of the world are on eastern Ukraine, and we are going to make sure that the truth is out."

Echoing his calls, Germany's Angela Merkel said: "whoever it was must be brought to justice. For this we need an independent investigation."

"I see no way around seeking talks with the Russian president," Ms Merkel was quoting by The Australian as saying on Friday, adding that Germany would continue engaging with Moscow directly.

Following an emergency national security meeting, the UK prime minister David Cameron called for justice.

"If, as seems possible, this was brought down, then those responsible must be brought to account, and we must lose no time in doing that," Mr. Cameron said after the meeting, the NYT reported.

"It is an absolutely shocking incident and cannot be allowed to stand," he added.

The calls come as reports suggest of the plane's black boxes was retrieved by the separatists and is currently en route to Moscow.

Joining the calls, the Russian president Vladamir Putin also urged talks and a rapid resolution to the conflict.

"Direct talks between the opposing sides must be established as soon as possible. All sides in the conflict must swiftly halt fighting and begin peace negotiations," Putin said on Friday, reported Reuters.

"It is with great concern and sadness that we are watching what is happening in eastern Ukraine. It's awful, it's a tragedy," he added.
