World leaders mark D-Day 70th anniversary

World leaders gathered in Normandy, France on Friday to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings.

More famously known as D-Day, the landings began the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe and eventually led to the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War 2.

French President, Francois Hollande opening the ceremony in the presence of World War 2 veterans, said that those soldiers 70 years ago shared a vision, "the promise of a world free of tyranny and war but it was also the dream of a society that would be more just and more fraternal".

US President, Barack Obama in his address said:

“We are on this Earth for only a moment in time. And fewer of us have parents and grandparents to tell us about what the veterans of D-Day did here seventy years ago. So we have to tell their stories for them. We have to do our best to uphold in our own lives the values that they were prepared to die for. We have to honor those who carry forward that legacy today, recognizing that people cannot live in freedom unless free people are prepared to die for it.
