WFP warns of Sri Lankan households skipping meals to deal with economic crisis

According to the latest World Food Programme (WFP) surveys, seven out of ten households are adopting negative coping strategies, such as limiting portion sizes or skipping meals altogether to deal with high food prices and reduced incomes in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is facing the worst humanitarian crisis in its history. Facing unprecedented difficulties, around 7 million of people are not able to purchase essential food items amidst prevailing food shortages and soaring food prices.

As USAID’s long-time support to WFP and the Government of Sri Lanka includes disaster risk reduction initiatives related to floods and landslides. 

This year, the US has provided a record total US$20 million (approximately LKR 7.3 billion) to support WFP’s response to the economic crisis in Sri Lanka.
