US to recognise Syrian opposition offices as foreign mission

The United States is to legally recognise offices of the Syrian National Coalition as a "foreign mission", reported Reuters.

The move was "aimed at formalising the relationship between Washington and the coalition, which until now has been represented by liaison offices in Washington and New York,"
a State Department spokesperson was reported by the news agency as saying on Monday.

The decision comes ahead of a visit by the Syrian opposition to Washington. The delegation, led by the Syrian National Coalition president, Ahmad Jarba, is to meet US Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday.

Plans to increase non-lethal financial assistance to opposition forces by $27 million were also announced.
