US Ambassador praises Sri Lankan army for ‘peace, democracy and justice in Jaffna’

The Sri Lankan army claimed the US ambassador praised the military “for their contribution to the sustenance of peace in the peninsula” whilst on a visit to the occupied city of Jaffna last week.

According to a report on the official army website, the military said US Ambassador Julie Chung praised the security forces during a meeting with the head of the military in Jaffna Major General Sujeewa Senarath Yapa.

The report says Chung “left compliments in the visitors’ book before her departure”.

“She also penned saying that she appreciated the sheer commitment and dedication of the Security Forces working for peace, democracy & justice among the Jaffna people,” it added.

The US Embassy in Colombo has been contacted for comment.

Chung, made a visit to Jaffna last month where she met with Tamil families of the disappeared, major Tamil political parties, civil society actors, religious groups, and business communities.

“It was essential to me to visit the North early in my tenure as Ambassador,” said Ambassador Chung. “During the visit, I explored the history of the region and heard from people first-hand about their challenges and opportunities.  I gained a much better understanding of the impact of the war and the human rights concerns, as well as the current economic situation in the North.”
