United Nations to consider reports of genocide in CAR probe

Leaders of a United Nations investigation of human rights abuses in Central African Republic further outlined their intention to extend their investigation to look into “reports of genocide” as they launched a probe Monday.

Expressing concern over hate propaganda used by ethnic communities in the conflict, the chair of the investigation, Bernard Acho Muna, said,

“We are hoping that our presence and the investigations we are doing will be a signal that the people who are making this hate propaganda will not move to action.”

Referring to his experience in Rwanda he said,

“the genocide starts always with propaganda, convincing the population that this group of people is evil, they are bad, and they should be eliminated.”

The International Criminal Court (ICC) also opened preliminary investigations into the conflict as ethnic violence remains to be increasing in intensity.
