UN Security Council condemns Dhaka attack

The United Nations Security Council has condemned an attack on a café in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka, which killed twenty hostages and two police officers on Friday night.

The Council stated that it “condemns the heinous and cowardly terrorist attack” and reaffirmed that “terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security”.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also spoke out against the incident and said he “hopes that those behind this crime will be identified and brought to justice”.

Mr Ban “stands firmly by Bangladesh as it confronts this threat and stresses the need to intensify regional and international efforts to prevent and combat terrorism,” said his spokesperson.

The dead hostages included nine Italians, seven Japanese, one US citizen and an Indian reports the BBC, with six gunmen shot dead by Bangladeshi commandos and another arrested.
