UN launches conflict surveillance drones in eastern Congo

The United Nations forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo, for the first time, launched unmanned aircraft drones to monitor the unsettled border of Rwanda and Uganda.

The drones will be used to identify threats from armed groups in the highly charged conflict regions in eastern Congo.

Commenting on the new initiative, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Herve Ladsous, said,

“The drones will allow us to have reliable information about the movement of populations in the areas where there are armed groups.”

“We will survey areas where there are armed groups, and we can control the frontier.”
