UN High Commissioner Navi Pillay has warned of war crimes occurring in Iraq, as militant group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) released images of the shooting of dozens of captured Iraqi soldiers.
The images, released on a militant website appear to show the killings, reportedly taking place north of Baghdad, with the Iraqi Army’s Lieutenant General Qassim al-Moussawi confirming their authenticity.
The release comes as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay warned of “summary executions and extrajudicial killings”, adding that "murder of all kinds, mutilation, cruel treatment and torture constitute war crimes."
Pillay went on to say,
"I am extremely concerned about the acute vulnerability of civilians caught in the cross-fire, or targeted in direct attacks by armed groups, or trapped in areas under the control of ISIL and their allies".
"There will be particular scrutiny of the conduct of ISIL, given their well-documented record of committing grave international crimes in Syria."
