UN envoy confirms Syrian peace talks in January

The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura confirmed that the Syria peace talks were planned to start in Geneva on January 25, reports Reuters.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with her representatives of the United States, Russia and other major world powers, Mr Mistura said,

“The meeting was essential in order to move forward on th Geneva talks, and there are issues still, and very much at stake, that’s why I needed to consult them.

The Assistant US Secretary of State Anne Patterson said the talks were still on track and that she had been involved in a “good conversation” with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov.

“Everyone’s primary concern is humanitarian access given some of the dire situations that are taking place inside of Syria,” she added.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said that Gatilov would meet representatives of various Syrian opposition groups on Thursday.
