Ukraine accuses Russia of sending tanks across border

Ukraine has accused Russia of sending a convoy of 32 tanks, 16 howitzer cannons and 30 trucks of troops into eastern Ukraine.

A Ukrainian military spokesperson told reporters at a briefing in Kiev that the convoy was carrying ammunition and fighters into the Luhansk region on Thursday, heading towards the city of Krasnyi Luch.

Colonel Andriy Lysenko, told reporters “the deployment continues of military equipment and Russian mercenaries to the frontlines.”

Nato stated that it was aware of the reports with a military officer telling Reuters,
“If this crossing into Ukraine is confirmed it would be further evidence of Russia’s aggression and direct involvement in destabilising Ukraine.”
The reports come after the pro-Russian separatist held areas of eastern Ukraine held elections on Sunday, with Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, saying that Moscow would “of course recognise the results”.

After the vote, Russia said that it “respected the will of the people” adding that the separatists now had a “mandate to negotiate with the central Ukrainian authorities and resolve through political dialogue all the problems that have accumulated over many months”.
