Sri Lanka's notorious STF claim to arrest suspected arms smugglers

Sri Lanka’s notorious Special Task Force (STF), which has been implicated in numerous mass atrocities, is reported to have arrested suspected arms smugglers in Tunkama area in the town of Embilipitiya, located in the South of Sri Lanka.

During the raid, the STF claimed to have recovered "two T-type firearms, a cap type gun, 2 swords,2 T-56 bullets, 2 9mm bullets, 12 bore and 16 bore bullets".

In May of this year, Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary, and accused war criminal, Kamal Gunaratne, reported that the STF would be taking on greater responsibility in countering “religious extremism” and the “drug mafia”.

This report comes as Britain’s Metropolitan Police are currently undertaking a war crimes investigation into British mercenaries alleged to have committed human rights violations in Sri Lanka and to have trained the STF.

Yardstick films revealed undercover footage in December 2017, revealing deep ties between Scotland’s police force and the STF, who would later be implicated in anti-Muslim riots in 2018. Despite concern over training provided to Sri Lanka’s police, these programs have continued.
