“Something is being organised,” warned Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, stating that Sri Lanka’s Catholic Church is currently working with the Vatican on a secret plan to ensure justice for victims of the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.
“The plans cannot be revealed yet, but something is being organised,” the cardinal said, according to a report in Economy Next. “If we cannot find a solution within the country, we will try going through international organisations.”
“If we do go international,” he added, “the government alone must take responsibility for that, because it is the government that has not paid an iota of attention to this. We cannot accept that.”
Ranjith’s warnings come after the cardinal has repeatedly lamented the failure of the Sri Lankan government to fully investigate the circumstances around the attacks. Last year the archdiocese of Colombo in August said, “It is clear from this procedure that after such a long time the government has no interest in finding out the truth about the attack and they are going to cover it up and wash their hands”.
They accused the government, led by strongman president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, of capitalising on the Easter attacks to come to power at the end of 2019 on a mandate of security but have since failed to live up to their promises. Members of the Catholic community also allege they are now being harassed for their actions demanding justice.
