Spate of attacks leave over 100 dead in Nigeria

Over 150 people have been reportedly killed in Nigeria this week, after attacks a spate of attacks in the country’s North-East attributed to Islamist organisation Boko Haram.

Wednesday saw at least 47 people killed in the town of Bama, after militants reportedly attacked a school and the palace of a traditional ruler. The attack occurred as militants had attempted to launch an assault on a Nigerian army general’s house, elsewhere in the Borno state.

On Sunday, an estimated 106 people were killed in Igze according to Borno's Governor Kashim Shettima, who added that without reinforcements "it is absolutely impossible for us to defeat Boko Haram".

Commenting on the attack in Igze," U.S. State Department spokesman for Africa Will Stevens said in Washington,

"The senseless targeting of innocent civilians is unacceptable … We encourage Nigerian authorities to investigate this heinous act and to hold accountable ... those responsible."

The latest attack comes just a day after a Nigerian Presidential spokesperson claimed the army was "winning the war" against the Islamist organisation.
