Spanish courts to hear genocide case against Hu Jintao

Spain’s highest criminal court has agreed to hear a lawsuit against former Chinese President Hu Jintao, as part of an investigation into whether genocide was carried out in Tibet.

The decision was made after an appeal against an earlier court decision to drop the case in June. Judges ruled they were competent to carry on with the case because one of the plaintiffs, Thubten Wangchen, holds Spanish citizenship.

Speaking with Voice Of America's Tibetan Service Wangchen said,

“I think this will make the Chinese leaders to be more careful in the future and give a message that they can’t bury the truth about it,” he said.

A foreign ministry spokeswoman for China slammed Spain for interfering with a “domestic” matter, stating,

"Tibet is an inseparable part of China."

"We are firmly opposed to any country or any individuals' interference in China's domestic affairs under the pretext of the Tibet-related issue."
