Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic has stated that Serbia will never recognise Kosovo’s independence at a speech commemorating the historic Battle of Kosovo.
Nikolic reportedly went on to tell the crowd that “Serbia will continue fighting for its holy land”, before adding,
"Today, our neighbour Albanians are building houses and are farming. I wish them luck but want them to know that they are building on Serb soil."
However Nikolic’s speech was disturbed by hundreds in the crowd who booed him and managed to throw a firecracker at the stage. Members of the crowd chanted that he had “betrayed Kosovo”, yelling “Treason, treason!”
Anger still remains after an agreement was signed last year between Serbia and Kosovo, normalising ties.
Vidovdan or St. Vitus Day marks the 14th century Battle of Kosovo, a revered day for Serb nationalists, when Serbian forces battled against the Ottoman Empire.
