Security Council reach Syria deal

Following several days of ‘high-level’ talks in New York, the permanent members of the UN Security Council have reached an agreement on a legally binding resolution that would require Syria to dismantle its recently discovered chemical weapons program.

Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov told reporters on Thursday night that an understanding had been made with the U.S.

An official for the U.S. State Department said:

“This is a breakthrough arrived at through hard-fought diplomacy,”

“Equally as important, it makes absolutely clear that failure of the Assad regime to comply will have consequences.”
