Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk has condemned Russia as a “threat to global order”on Saturday, as Ukrainian troops claimed to have successfully defended Donetsk airport from an attack by pro-Russian separatists.
Speaking at a security conference in Kiev, Yatseniuk said, “I clearly understand the final goal of (Russian President) Putin. He doesn’t want to take just Donetsk and Luhansk,” referring to areas that separatists are currently fighting for control over.
“He is trying to take all of Ukraine. He wants to re-form the Soviet Union…” he continued. “Russia is a threat to the global order and to the security of Europe.”
Yatseniuk’s comments come as the Ukrainian military claimed to have successfully repelled an attack by separatists on the airport in Donetsk. The latest clashes threaten a ceasefire that has been shakily holding since September 5th.
Meanwhile Russian customs officials confirmed that a convoy of over 200 Russian vehicles has crossed into Eastern Ukraine. Russia states that the trucks are carrying humanitarian aid, yet Ukrainian officials have complained Russia continues to supply the separatists with military support.
