This weekend saw a renewed eruption of clashes between the South Sudanese government and opposition forces, with reports of over 100 dead according to UN peacekeepers.
Reports indicate that Duk County and Gadiang saw heavy fighting, with more than 100 bodies scattered around the roads of Malakal according to UN peacekeepers.
Approximately 22,000 civilians have sought shelter within the UN base in Malakal, with 50,000 more seeking refuge in other bases across the country.
Meanwhile, humanitarian aid agency Medair withdrew its staff from Malakal on Sunday, as unrest continues to grow.
Willem van Amerongen, Medair’s Deputy Country Director, one of the staff to be relocated said,
“Terrible things are happening in Malakal… We’ve seen a lot of wounded people, and many are experiencing great sorrow because of losing loved ones and their homes. It has been reported that the town is completely destroyed.”
