The Sri Lankan prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday that Muslim schools, known as Madrasas, would be brought under the Ministry of Education, following the Easter Sunday bombings by Islamic extremists.
The decision follows widespread calls for it from the right wing JHU, former president Chandrika Kumaratunge, and the president.
Wickremesinghe asserted the move was agreed to by the Muslim community, and would include the regulation of the activites of the Madrasas.
He added that approval would not be granted to establishing a 'Sharia university' on the island.
