MP Professor Channa Jayasumana, a former member of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), has alleged a plot by members of the SLPP to force the resignation of current Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and replaced him with disgraced former President and Prime Minister, Mahinda Rajapaksa.
On May 9, 2022, Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from his post as Prime Minister amidst mass protests against the island’s economic collapse. Mahinda Rajapaksa, and his brother then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, have been accused of leading the country into economic ruin due to their mismanagement of the economy and corruption.
