The Pachilaipalli Pradeshiya Sabha has announced that all liquor outlets within its jurisdiction will be closed on 27 November, after unanimously resolving to mark Maaveerar Naal - or Great Heroes Day - as a sacred day of remembrance.
The decision was taken at yesterday’s council meeting, during which the 2026 budget was also passed with the support of all 13 members. Sabha Secretary Subramaniyam Suren described the unanimous approval as unprecedented in the council’s history.
For the first time since the Sabha was established, both the revenue and expenditure plans have received full consensus, he said. “This represents a change. As the nation undergoes transformation, so too has our Sabha embraced this new spirit. Accordingly, all development projects under our jurisdiction will be implemented swiftly. Today, our Sabha has made several crucial decisions.”
Among those decisions was the move to shut liquor shops across Pachilaipalli on Maaveerar Naal, in honour of the tens of thousands of Tamil fighters who were killed in the struggle for liberation.
The Sabha said the measure was intended to uphold the solemnity of the day and to commemorate “the fallen heroes, who gave their lives in the struggle for the liberation of our people,” reaffirming that 27 November would be observed as a sacred occasion within the local authority’s area.
