OHCHR highlights sectarian nature of CAR violence

A recent United Nations investigation into the escalating conflict in the Central African Republic (CAR) concluded that the widespread killings and sexual violence against civilians has become increasingly sectarian in nature.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) deployed a four-man team to CAR from 12 to 24 December 2013.

The team carried out over 180 interviews with victims and witnesses, which revealed that the attacks were of a sectarian nature. Attacks on religious places of worship were also documented by the investigators.

The report will form a first point of evidence, as the UN gears up to establish a Commission of Inquiry to investigate human rights abuses in CAR.

The OHCHR conclusions, which highlight the sectarian nature of the violence, come as the at UN Human Rights Council  (UNHRC) looks to discuss the ongoing rights abuses in the country, at an emergency session next week.
