Newly appointed Finance Minister resigns within 24 hours

Sri Lankan President rejects resignation of Justice Minister | Tamil Guardian

Ali Sabry tendered his resignation this morning, a day after being appointed as Finance Minister by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa amidst Sri Lanka's national crisis.

Sabry, a long time ally of Rajapaksa, was one of the four new Ministers appointed yesterday after the entire Cabinet, excluding Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, resigned over the weekend.

In a letter to the President, Sabry claimed that he originally accepted the position to "maintain parliamentary democracy and the stability of the system and constitutuational governance."

"However, after much reflection and deliberation, and taking into consideration the current situation, I am now of the view, for your Excellency to make suitable interim arrangement to navigate this unprecedented crisis, fresh and proactive and unconventional steps needs to be taken, including the appointment of a new Finance Minister," Sabry wrote.

Island-wide anti-government protests began on Friday and have continue to take place as demonstrators have continuously called for the resignation of the ruling Rajapaksa brothers.
