Mark Carney wins Canadian election, Gary Anandasangaree re-elected

Mark Carney has led the Liberal Party to victory in the 2025 Canadian federal election, with results announced this morning, securing a mandate to govern after months of political uncertainty.

Speaking as results were announced, Carney said that the "old relationship of integration with the US is now over," after US President Donald Trump loomed large across the whole campaign. "We are over the shock of the American betrayal, we have to take care of each other," Carney added.

"I will always do my best to represent everyone who calls Canada home," said Carney.

Carney beat Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who unexpectedly lost his own seat in Carleton, Ontario.

Votes are still being counted to see if the Liberals will clear the threshold of 172 seats, to secure a majority government. Poilievre called the Liberal Party's win a "razor-thin" margin and pledged his party would "hold the government to account".

New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh he announced that he would be stepping down as party leader, saying it was the "honour of my life" to serve, with his party projected to win just 7 seats at present.

Among those re-elected was Gary Anandasangaree, who made history earlier this year by becoming the first-ever Tamil-Canadian to be appointed as Canada’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General. Anandasangaree was initially appointed to the role on 14 March.

Before his entry into politics, Anandasangaree forged a career as a lawyer and community advocate, working with organisations such as the Canadian Tamils’ Chamber of Commerce, the Canadian Tamil Congress, and the Canadian Tamil Youth Development Centre. He was also a familiar voice at the United Nations Human Rights Council, where he frequently spoke out on the ongoing persecution of Tamils in Sri Lanka and called for international accountability for war crimes.

As a Member of Parliament, Anandasangaree was instrumental in Canada’s recognition of May 18th as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day—the first country in the world to officially do so. He also championed sanctions against Sri Lankan officials implicated in war crimes and crimes against humanity. In addition to his work on Tamil issues, Anandasangaree has been a prominent advocate for Indigenous rights within Canada. As Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, he worked to advance reconciliation initiatives, address historical injustices, and promote Indigenous land rights.

Also elected to parliament was another Tamil-Canadian Juanita Nathan for the Liberal Party.
