A memorial event was held today in Maravankulam, Vavuniya, to honour the civilians who lost their lives because of the catastrophic Cyclone Ditwah, which has killed more than 600 people.
Organised by the residents of Maravankulam village, the ceremony opened with a symbolic act led by a young girl who had donated the savings from her own collection box towards the welfare of those affected. She lit the first lamp of remembrance, after which villagers gathered to light candles and pay their respects to those killed.

The act of remembrance reflected the deep impact of the crisis on local communities, as residents collectively mourned the loss of civilian lives amid ongoing instability and hardship faced across the island.

Following the memorial, the relief goods collected by the villagers were formally handed over to the Mass Organisation for Social Justice for distribution to affected families.

The event was attended by members of the village clergy, representatives of local community organisations, and residents from the surrounding area.
