In cities around the world 11 years ago, the Tamil diaspora took to the streets in a historic series of protests, demanding international action to halt Sri Lanka’s massacres at Mullivaikkal.
To mark 11 years since the protests, the ‘Mapping Resistance’ website has been re-launched.
Access it here: www.RememberMay2009.com/Mapping-Resistance
The website was launched last year as part of a collaborative project between the Adayaalam Centre for Policy Research, Tamil Guardian and 47 Roots.
“We dedicate this page to the Tamil diaspora who took to the streets all over the world in 2009 to re-direct international attention onto the atrocities taking place in Mullivaikkal,” said the organisations.
“In the face of the massacres taking place in the Tamil homeland, the diaspora prove to be a force of resistance. They resisted narratives that downplayed the scale of the atrocities. They resisted the hostility of their host countries. Amidst the grief and horror of genocide, they resisted. We hope that this ongoing archive will serve as a way to honour the continued resilience of the diaspora.”
"This map includes close to 500 photos and videos from more than 20 cities around the world. However, we are hoping to continue adding to the map. Please submit any photos from protests in your city using the form at the bottom of the page."
