The UN and US announced Thursday, that Israel and Hamas, have agreed to an unconditional 72 hour humanitarian ceasefire that will commence on Friday morning, reports Al-Jazeera.
A joint statement by the UN Secretary General and US Secretary of state said that the Israelis and Palestinians would enter talks in Cairo, after the ceasefire began at 05:00 GMT.
“During this period, civilians in Gaza will receive urgently needed humanitarian relief, and the opportunity to carry out vital functions, including burying the dead, taking care of the injured, and restocking food supplies.
Overdue repairs on essential water and energy infrastructure could also continue during this period,” said Ban Ki-Moon and John Kerry.
Gaza’s ministry of health reported the death toll at 1,437 Palestinians. The conflict has seen 56 Israelis, mostly soldiers, die.
