Independent Kurdistan now 'foregone conclusion' says Israel

Israel signalled its support to an independent Kurdistan this week, stating that amid escalating violence in Iraq, an independent Kurdistan was a "foregone conclusion", reports Reuters.

"Iraq is breaking up before our eyes and it would appear that the creation of an independent Kurdish state is a foregone conclusion," said Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman in a meeting with the US Secretary of State John Kerry, in Paris on Thursday.

Israel's president, Shimon Peres told US president Barack Obama on Wednesday:

"The Kurds have, de facto, created their own state, which is democratic. One of the signs of a democracy is the granting of equality to women."

The public statements amid increasing speculation of on-going private engagement between the Israelis and the Kurds, despite seeming silence.

"Our silence - in public, at least – is best. Any unnecessary utterance on our part can only harm them [Kurds]," the Israeli news site, Arutz Sheva, quoted a senior Israeli defence official, as saying.
