ICC opens war crimes investigation into CAR

The International Criminal Court has opened a preliminary investigation into reports of war crimes in the Central African Republic, as sectarian violence continues to escalate in the country.

ICC Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda stated earlier,

"My office has reviewed many reports detailing acts of extreme brutality... and allegations of serious crimes being committed."

"I have therefore decided to open a preliminary investigation into this... situation."

She went on to detail that investigations so far have included,

"hundreds of killings, acts of rape and sexual slavery, destruction of property, pillaging, torture, forced displacement and recruitment and use of children in hostilities."

Bensouda also went on to note that "in many incidents, victims appear to have been deliberately targeted on religious grounds.''
