Senior Asia researcher for HRW, David Scott Mathieson, citing tragic events saw that thousands of Rohingya refugees flee Myanmar on boats, said,
“The root cause is the long term reprehensible treatment of the Rohingya in Myanmar, stateless, officially and socially reviled, with sever curbs on their rights to work, travel, get health care and education, and practice their religion.”
Mr Mathieson said that political opportunists where seeking to profit from the “darker nature of Myanmar’s Buddhists.”
“The extremism reflected in the laws suggests a future of even greater violence and division,” he concluded.
