The truce between Israel and Hamas was interrupted by rocket fire into Israel, followed by Israeli air strikes into Gaza, hours before it was set to end as negotiators in Cairo strove to build a longer lasting ceasefire.
The Israeli military said it launched air strikes "targetting terror sites across the Gaza strip" in response to 3 rockets striking Southern Israel, which it says was launched by Hamas.
"This rocket attack was a grave and direct violation of the ceasefire," a spokesperson for Israeli Prime Minister, Mark Regev, said, reports Reuters.
Hamas has at present not claimed responsibility for the attack. According to the BBC, shortly before the rocket fire a spokesperson for the organisation had said however: "If Netanyahu doesn't understand... the language of politics in Cairo, we know how to make him understand."
The resumption in violence comes hours after a truce, initially agreed for 3 days before being extended by 5 days, was extended by another 24 hours.
