Experts push for war crimes tribunal in Syria

A group of international war crimes experts for a special tribunal to be created to try top-ranking officials, soldiers or rebels who may have committed atrocities during Syria’s civil war.

Speaking to the Associated Press, a spokesperson for the group said that they want to push the issue of accountability for war crimes into ongoing international discussions over Syria, in the hope of deterring combatants from committing further atrocities such as the use of chemical weapons.

As Syria is not a party to the International Criminal Court (ICC), The Hague does not have jurisdiction over war crimes committed there unless granted by the UN Security Council.
