Dozens feared dead after migrant boat sinks off Turkey

At least 24 people have been killed and more are feared dead, after a fishing boat carrying migrants capsized off the cost of Turkey on Monday.

Children and women were reportedly amongst the dead as rescuers continued the search for survivors, with 6 people having being rescued so far.

Whilst it remains unclear where the passengers were from, NBC reports that the vessel was carrying 42 migrants from Afghanistan.

Rescuer Ali Saruhan told Hurriyet Daily News,
"The wind is making our task very difficult. The boat is a very small one. But they were carrying 40 people in it. We are seeing bodies of children floating in the sea."
It is unclear where the boat was heading, but reports suggest that it was trying to get to Bulgaria or Romania, both members of the European Union.

An estimated 1,200 migrants have died crossing the Black Sea or Mediterranean in attempts to reach Europe so far this year.
